SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING OUTCOMES 

Horizons School will prepare its graduates to be:

1.       CRITICAL THINKERS who:

  • Research and analyze using multiple resources

  • Analyze media including television, print, and electronic sources to arrive at a valid interpretation on information

  • Independently consider alternative approaches and potential outcomes

  • Use thinking skills to make beneficial life choices

2.       SELF-DIRECTED, LIFELONG LEARNERS who:

  • Understand how they learn, set goals, accept responsibility and keep commitments as part of their own success

  • Welcome and explore new challenges while adapting to and becoming involved with the world’s changing issues and interdependence

  • Dream, plan, pursue and achieve personal, academic and career goals

  • Seek their potential for physical and emotional well-being with a strong sense of self-confidence

3.       EFFECTIVE AND DISCERNING COMMUNICATORS who:

  • Understand written, auditory and visual material

  • Develop an awareness and consideration of the diversity within our local and global communities and our environmental interdependence

WASC High School Accreditation & UC/CSU Approved Courses

Horizons Center for Independent Study is a grades 9-12 alternative education program within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD). HCIS is a fully WASC-accredited school, staffed by California credentialed teachers, and offers a UC/CSU approved college preparatory program. Courses offered at HCIS meet all the requirements for graduation from MDUSD, and a high school diploma from HCIS is equivalent to a high school diploma from a traditional comprehensive California high school.
